Freud on religion (Ephesians 2:9)

Let me run a controversial theory by you. Is it possible to achieve salvation by your own merit? Based on the guidelines set forth in the Bible, yes. Oh really now? So how do I stick it to the big man? Well, all you have to do is not sin ...ever ...in your entire life. If you can do that, go ahead and boast your brains out. (It's not a sin if it's true!) Unfortunately, it would take an act of God to achieve this anyway so I think you'd better just stick to plan B like the rest of us. (Cue Jesus)

This verse relates to a thought experiment I've been pondering lately about correlations between your chosen religion and your personality type. Does Christianity require you to have an inferiority complex or does it just draw the people that already do? Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of proud Christians (although that's almost an oxymoron since pride is a semi-sin), but really the founding principle of Christianity could be summed up as: You aren't good enough. God only picked you to be on his kickball team because he's the ultimate philanthropist.

My counter-argument would be that inferiority is a result of misdirected focus. If your trying to rationalize God by comparing him to yourself, well of course you're going to look like a schlub standing next to the omnipotent creator of the universe.  Take yourself out of the picture and just appreciate the fact that God loves you so much that he's going to take care of you.
Or is that just the inferiority complex talking?
