You murderer! (John 12:24)

if it dies it produces many seeds
The wording of this verse is what got me. The imagery of a seed “dying” was just too good to pass up. I mean, planting a seed doesn't kill it. On the contrary, a seed dies if you don't plant it. Death for a seed implies that it will never germinate (that means sprout for you non-horticulturists). I guess you could call the act of growing into a plant a death of the seed form, but it's really just a metamorphosis. Perhaps Jesus is making a commentary on the facade of death and the truth is that it's really only a beginning. Or perhaps it was just the scientific terminology of the day, like when people used to think that frogs were created out of muddy soil. Either way the “death of a seed” still makes me giggle.
